Q&A in English

CoindeskKorea interviewed Vitalik Buterin 5, April 2018 in Seoul, Korea. The Q&A in English is following :

- BitMain has announced on its homepage that it will ship a new Ethereum ASIC miner from this coming July. What do you think about the appearance of this Ethereum ASIC miner

"Now we have proof of work ASICs, I expect that will increase support for getting proof of stake out quickly. And will make it more likely that proof of stake will be out sooner."

-According to this future roadmap, Etherium will move the consensus algorithm from POW to POS (the Casper), It seems that it is not easy to adjust the interests of the mining groups even in the existing situation. And if there are ASIC miners, this problem will become harder. And the ASIC miners might be against hard forks for Casper.
"Important thing is that Ethererum’s hard fork is different from bitcoin’s hard fork, because for Ethereurm’s hark fork, miners do not need to agree. If 90 % of the miners go to one branch, but the users go to the other branch then the other branch is still the dominant branch. So in this case, first of all, miners have known it for a really long time like everyone in the community has known since 2014 that the capser is coming. And I actually think that the Ethererum community, in general, does believe in the idea of basic resistance to a secure proof of work decentralization and …so the fact that now we have proof of work ASICs, I expect that will increase support for getting proof of stake out quickly. And will make it more likely that proof of stake will be out sooner."

- Platforms such as EOS and Cardano have been advocating three generations differentiated from Etherium. Do you agree with this generation division?
"well everyone likes to say that they’re the third generation. That’s how you work in your stuff. I think that all of these comparisons are absolutely ignore the fact that Ethererum itself is very rapidly upgrading. And we are in the process of adopting Casper and we are in the process of rapidly developing and adopting sharding. At least five teams are in the process of building Plasma implementation. All of these things will, I think, quite rapidly, really change the kind of and the amount of things that you can do with Ethererum."

-Although it was an April Fool’s day joke, there was a debate about limiting the total supply of ethe. Thanks to the joke, it turned out that there are mainly two groups of people: First: people wants Etherium's monetary policy to be more clear (whether it is restricted or not),And Second: people want the value of Etherium to be more stable. Can you tell us your opinion on these two ideas?
"So I actually disagree with the idea that inflationary monetary policy will make Ethererum more stable. Because on the one hand and it does reduce the chance that Ethererum’s value will go up quickly but on the other hand increases the chance that Ethererum’s value will go down to zero quickly, right*? In the long term, in general, I expect that as the number of cryptocurrencies continues to increase and new ones get issued I don’t actually think that cryptocurrencies that have constant inflation or constant inssuance will necessarily even be sustainable in the long term. I personally view that not having a long-run net issuance as being one way which Ethererum can, or one way which we can, actually ensure that ether does have a stable value in the long term."

- Some people think that Dan(EOS cofounder) is trying to dump Ethereurm’s price. Is there any defense strategy.
"It sounds like EOS just basically raised a bunch of money in their ICO and they are selling their ther, and their ether is being recycled back in the ICO. I am not sure of the details but it is okay and fine you know if someone has a billion dollars worth of ether then they can sell a billion dollars worth of ether. Like there is not much that we can do to stop that. It’s a free and open system. And at the end of the day if someone’s selling 1 billion dollars of ether is enough to completely crash the markets, then that shows us that cryptocurrency as a whole isn’t really all that stable."

-To deal with the heavy load on the blockchain, You suggested an idea to pay for keeping data on the blockchain network. Well it’s a proposal for a sustainable blockchain ecosystsem, It is a proposal for a sustainable block chain, but it is likely that the ecosystem will move with this economic incentive in the future. In other words, data-intensive services such as Netflix and YouTube are hard to activate. Also, the relief of Ethereum is Build unstoppable applications. If you do not pay rent, your app will stop.
"Remember the proposal that I made address the one where I give if a contract can’t be rent so the contract goes to sleep and if you wants to send a transaction to the contract then you can wake up the contract. So the idea is that if an application is used very rarely then the application could disappear from the call from the watching state temporarily but if someone wants to use it again they could always just send transaction to revive it. So it’s not like the application just dies and can’t be run."

-But there is still a huge burden for youtube, Netflix, etc. to run their service right?
"Not necessarily, well it does mean applications are more expensive if they have a large amount of state but at the same time things like sharding will make applications much cheaper if they don’t have large amount of state. So in general we do want the amount of fees that the average application pays to be about the same as it was before. This is more about aligning incentives and matching the costs and benefits than it is about everyone pay more."

-The Daico concept you presented is impressive. But sometimes blockchain doesn’t work was it is designed or intended. Like ico and cryptocurrecny exchange. Well, Daico itself seems to has the value of real decentralization in it. And personally think this a good example to solve blockchain’s limitation by blockchain. Can you talk about the philosophy of Daico?
"So, the basic idea is that is try to incorporates some elements of DAO into an ICO. Instead of ICO teams just getting money and with a very large amount of money going to the developers directly, the money goes into a smart contract and then the developers can only take out a small amount of money from the contract, like every block or every day or every month. If the team (the developers) wants to increase their budget, then the people put their money have to vote to approve it and if the participants are unhappy with the current project’s performance they can always vote to turn off the tap and that will refund all of the remaining funds. So the goal is to try to not create mechanisms where the developers behind DAICO project just get all the money immediate and they have no real incentive to continue working. It is more like, instead, they have to actually continue satisfying the participants in order to keep operating."

-Recently, CEO of Korea exchange Coinest has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling customer’s money. Can you share your idea on this?
"In general this is actually one of the nice use cases for a blockchain technology itself to solve, possibly through a Plasma. Basically, with Plasma you can make it a kind of semi-decentralized exchange where the exchange still does the order matching, but the Plasma’s smart contact is responsible for making sure that regardless of what the exchange itself does the accusers can still go through the process to get their money back. So basically it allows the exchange to be trusted for availability but not for custody. So if the exchanged gets hacked the worst thing could happen is the exchange will shut down for a week. With this kind of design, we won’t need to have exchanges hacked, we won’t have coin check situation. In general, I am really up for that we stop exchanges and start trying next kind of design this year."
